A CARE Package Donation for 200 people by International SEVA
In the words of the Founder –
In 2017, International SEVA received a message of hope and compassion. A low-income community in Texas was in dire need of Thanksgiving luncheon support. With unwavering determination, International SEVA stepped in to help.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that this community, comprising approximately 195 residents, faced a significant gap in assistance. Seven families rose to the occasion, contributing both financially and providing food donations. Their act of kindness set the stage for a heartwarming Thanksgiving celebration.
Remarkably, the children of these families, ranging from 7 to 25 years old, eagerly volunteered to lend a helping hand. Their enthusiasm and dedication were a testament to the power of community spirit.
The day preceding Thanksgiving, our team diligently assembled 200 lunch bags. Each bag was thoughtfully stocked with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, applesauce, a trio of fruits (orange, banana, apple), juice, and chips, ensuring a delightful experience for every recipient.
Parents encouraged their children
On the day of Thanksgiving, our fleet of five cars departed an hour ahead, laden with the prepared hot dishes and adorned with festive decorations. As we approached the venue, a long line came into view. Some first-time volunteers hesitated, disheartened by the rundown surroundings. However, with the encouragement of their parents, everyone rallied together, whether serving the main course, distributing sides (macaroni and cheese, beans, potatoes), offering apple, pumpkin, or pecan pie for dessert, dispensing drinks, or distributing the carefully prepared lunch bags.
Engaging in meaningful conversations with the local adults and children of various ages, we witnessed overwhelming gratitude. This was particularly poignant when they learned that the Thanksgiving Luncheon had initially faced cancellation. To the recipients, we may have seemed like celebrities, but in reality, we were just local volunteers eager to assist.
As we bid farewell, a father with a family of four children expressed profound gratitude, stating, “You are true angels; we haven’t had anything to eat for 2 days.”
During our journey back, a couple of children informed their parents that they preferred returning to serve again over having a birthday party. It was a day brimming with immense gratitude, smiles, and a hands-on lesson for the volunteers.
Hats off to International SEVA and the compassionate community of donors and volunteers who made this heartwarming experience possible. Their selfless acts of kindness made a profound impact on the lives of those in need, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the spirit of giving.
